Thrown Forms

Wheel Throwing Course in Singapore · 6 Sessions · 2.5 Hours · Date TBA

About the course

Six sessions at the wheel. Centre, throw, trim, glaze.

Thrown Forms is a 6-session wheel throwing course in Singapore that follows a single discipline from start to finish. No hand building, no split focus – the entire course is spent at the potter’s wheel, building the kind of control and familiarity that only comes from sustained repetition.

The sessions move from centering and pulling walls through to trimming leather-hard work and glazing finished ceramic pieces. The same forms return across sessions – cylinders, bowls, open forms – each time with more control, more ease, and a deeper understanding of what the clay is doing under your hands.

“The wheel asks for patience before it gives you anything. Thrown Forms is the time it takes to start hearing what the clay is telling you.”

No prior pottery experience required, though students who have completed First Forms will find themselves working from a stronger foundation. Suitable for beginners ready to commit to the wheel and returning potters looking to refine their technique.

What the course covers

Three stages, six sessions

I · Throwing – Centering, Opening & Pulling Walls

Centering clay on the potter’s wheel, opening the form, and pulling walls. The fundamentals of wheel throwing – repeated, refined, and built upon across multiple sessions. Cylinders, bowls, and simple open forms. The emphasis is on rhythm, consistency, and developing a feel for the material under pressure.

II · Trimming – Foot, Weight & Refinement

Leather-hard work returned to the wheel for trimming. Refining the foot, adjusting weight and proportion, finishing the form before it goes to the kiln. The stage most beginner pottery classes never reach – here, it is given proper time. Students learn to read the wall thickness by touch and to understand what trimming reveals about the decisions made during throwing.

III · Glazing – Application, Surface & Fire

Glaze applied to bisque-fired work. Dipping, pouring, and brushwork – how glaze behaves on a thrown surface, how thickness and application method affect the final result. The kiln completes the work. Students collect their finished ceramic pieces 4 weeks after the glaze firing.
