About the course
Two ways of working with clay.
First Forms is a 6-session beginner pottery course in Singapore covering both hand building and wheel throwing, the two foundational disciplines of ceramics. The course opens with the hands: coiling, pinching, and carving from a solid block of clay. From there, to the potter’s wheel, centering, pulling walls, and trimming, the full process from wet clay to finished form.
The course closes with glazing, applied to work made in both hand building and wheel throwing sessions. Students leave with a body of fired ceramic pieces and a clear sense of which direction they want to take their practice.
“Some things are learned at the wheel. Others are only found with the hands. First Forms begins with both.”
No prior experience required. The pace is unhurried. Suitable for complete beginners and those returning to pottery after time away.
What the course covers
Three components, six sessions
I · Hand Building – Coiling, Pinching & Carving
Form built directly by hand — additive and subtractive methods side by side. The course opens without the wheel. Slow, deliberate, and entirely in direct contact with the clay.
II · Wheel Throwing – Centering, Pulling & Trimming
The full wheel throwing process: centering clay on the potter’s wheel, opening, pulling walls, and trimming leather-hard work. Every stage a piece moves through before it reaches the kiln.
III · Glazing – Surface & Fire
Glaze applied to finished work from both hand building and wheel throwing components. The kiln has the final word. Students collect their fired ceramic pieces after the glaze firing is complete.
