About the course

The whole arc. Raw clay to fired surface.

The Full Material is an 8-session pottery course in Singapore that follows clay through every stage of the ceramic process. From the first session at the hand building table to the moment finished pieces come out of the glaze kiln, nothing is skipped, nothing is rushed.

The course moves through hand building, wheel throwing, trimming, and a dedicated understanding of ceramic materials and glaze — how each component behaves, how metallic oxides produce colour, and how the kiln has the final word on every surface decision made.

“Most people have never seen their own work through to the end. The Full Material changes that.”

Suitable for beginners and those with some prior pottery experience working side by side. No prior experience required. Eight sessions is enough time to move slowly and still arrive somewhere.

What the course covers

Four disciplines, eight sessions

I · Hand Building – Coiling, Pinching & Carving

Form built directly by hand: coiling, pinching, and carving from a solid block. Additive and subtractive methods side by side. The course opens here, without the potter’s wheel.

II · Wheel Throwing – Centering, Pulling & Form

Centering, opening, and pulling walls on the potter’s wheel. The rhythm of throwing – what it asks of the hands and how it differs entirely from building by hand.

III · Trimming – Foot, Form & Refinement

Leather-hard work returned to the wheel for trimming: refining the foot, correcting the form, and finishing surfaces before the first firing.

IV · Glaze – Understanding Materials, Oxides & Surface

Glaze mixed from raw components. How glass formers, flux, and colorants interact and their roles in ceramic glaze. Colour introduced through metallic oxides – cobalt for blue, copper for green, iron for warmth and depth. Students mix and understand the categorical roles of materials in glaze.
